“I TAKE it things went really well last night,” PC said the following morning. Falco had already left to go see his uncle, and PC sat at the table sipping his coffee, yawning widely. Obviously he hadn’t gotten much sleep either.
“Where did you end up?”
“It seems Bonnie’s family has a cabin on one of the lakes, and we went there and scared fish, birds, and every other kind of wildlife possible. That woman is a screamer, and man, is it awesome.” His smile was big and bright. “I think she’s pretty special.” Even in moments like this, a sadness lingered in PC’s eyes, which Carter knew was for his lost mate.
“Do you see a future for the two of you? She is human, after all, and you’ll need to deal with all of that.” Telling humans was always dicey at best, and if it didn’t go well… packs sometimes had them killed to keep their secrets.
“The more I’m with her, the more I think so. She’s special. I think I’m falling in love with her.” PC sighed.
“Nothing will ever be like what you had with your mate.” His parents hadn’t been able to live without each other, their mate bond too strong. “We mate for life, you know that, and finding someone else who makes you happy is rare enough, but moving on from that is remarkable.” Carter tried not to smile too brightly as he thought of Falco. He still had his mate. “I know you’ll make the right decision.” He patted PC on the shoulder and went back to his room to get the last of the things he needed before leaving for the store.
Sundays were interesting days. He didn’t open till noon, so it gave him time in the morning to get a few extra things done. The puppies were amazingly energetic and delighted to see him, as were most of the other creatures in his care. They always came first, and he jumped into cleaning cages, feeding, and watering as much as possible before the others came in for work. He finished working with the animals and went into the back room to load up the stock cart, then wheeled it out to the front. Carter liked this quiet time of the morning. He didn’t usually stock the shelves himself, but sometimes it was nice doing mindless work.
He resupplied the dog food and was wheeling the cart to the bird supplies when the hair on the back of his neck stood. He turned toward the front of the store as a dog walked past the window.
Only it wasn’t a dog at all, and Carter knew it wasn’t Falco in wolf form either.
The wolf turned, standing near the door. He was huge, gray and black, and menacing as hell, with no gentleness in him. The wolf bared his teeth and stood tall, stretching up to show his full height and strength. It was early enough that no one was around. Even though the door was thick glass, Carter reached for his phone.
